PEEP! Amara blew her red whistle in the garden. “Who wants to make a BIG noise with me?” The daisies bobbed. A rabbit wiggled its ears. Then Pebble came slowly down the path, carrying one tiny leaf on his shell. “Can you roar?” asked Amara.

The whole story

PEEP! Amara blew her red whistle in the garden. “Who wants to make a BIG noise with me?” The daisies bobbed. A rabbit wiggled its ears. Then Pebble came slowly down the path, carrying one tiny leaf on his shell. “Can you roar?” asked Amara.

Pebble blinked. “Squawk? Squeak? A teeny little toot?” Pebble blinked again. Amara drummed on her knees. Pebble watched. She marched around a flowerpot. Pebble watched. “Oh,” she sighed, sitting beside him. “You’re a very quiet sort of friend.” The leaf slipped onto his nose.

“Want that leaf moved?” Pebble blinked once. Amara lifted it gently. “Want it back?” Two blinks. Amara leaned closer. “One means yes?” One blink! “And two means no?” One blink! “You ARE talking!” she whispered. “Let’s learn some more.”

They invented three blinks for LOOK UP and four for YOUR TURN. Then Rabbit called, “Hide-and-seek!” Amara and Pebble counted together: she whispered; he blinked. “Behind the lettuce?” Amara asked. Two blinks. “Near the flowerpots?” One blink. Then Pebble blinked three times.

Amara looked up. Two white ear tips! “Found you!” Rabbit hopped out. “You two win!” Amara raised her whistle, then tucked it away. “Another game, Pebble?” One blink. She grinned. “Blink-blink hooray!” Pebble rested one small foot on her shoe. Together, they were quite a team.
