The whole story

The Moon looked crooked tonight. One cheek puffed out. The other drooped like a sleepy pear. Maya waved from her garden. “Are you quite all right?” “Not quite,” whispered the Moon. “One of my socks blew away.” Then it hid behind a cloud.

“My corner of the sky is rather untidy,” the Moon murmured. Maya fetched her red-handled basket. She never lost anything twice. Every missing mitten, marble, or spoon went into this basket until its owner came. “Room for one sock,” she said. “Let’s look together.”

The Moon lowered a ribbon of light. Maya sent the basket sliding up it. Something fluttered inside. “A sock!” But no—a comet’s scarf, warm and tickly. Next came a planet’s ring. “Much too crunchy for toes,” Maya said. The Moon gave a small, surprised giggle.

They sent the scarf and ring home. Then—flap, flap! Something blue waved from Maya’s washing line, between her stripy towel and a very ordinary vest. “My sock!” cried the Moon. Maya unpegged it. Tiny white dots covered the heel. “Stars?” “Fluff,” admitted the Moon.

Up went the basket. On went the sock. The Moon wiggled both toes and shone extra bright over Maya’s garden. “Keep the basket handy?” it asked. “Of course.” Maya tucked a fallen peg inside. Above her, two blue socks glowed. One was inside out. Nobody minded.
