The whole story

Bop planted his round green feet in the canyon sand. He puffed out his cheeks. He opened his mouth. “HICup!” A pebble wobbled. From the cliffs, his cousins’ roars rolled back like thunder. Bop rubbed his throat. “I’d like one proper roar, please.”

He practised beside the fruit tree. “Rrrr—hic!” He tried with his eyes shut. “Hic-IPP!” One purple fruit plopped onto his head. “Thank you,” said Bop, although he had ordered a roar, not a snack. Then his cousins called, “Roaring contest! Come join us!”

The cousins lined up beneath the tree. “ROOOAR!” The canyon answered, “Roar! Roar! Roar!” Bop’s turn. His tail curled around his toes. “We’ll listen,” said his smallest cousin, making room. Bop stepped forward. He took a breath so big his belly looked like a melon.

“HIIIIII-CUP!” The tree shivered from roots to twigs. Plip! Plop! PLOPLOPLOP! Every purple fruit tumbled onto the sand. For one moment, nobody made a sound. Then a cousin whispered, “Your roar has snacks.” Bop giggled. He rolled the biggest fruit to his smallest cousin.

The cousins twisted fallen leaves into a crown. “Best Sound Ever!” they cheered. They settled down for a juicy feast, with Bop in the middle. “Encore! Again!” Bop stood tall beneath his leafy crown. “Hic.” The canyon whispered, “Hic. Hic. Hic.” Even the smallest sound came back to join the picnic.
