The whole story

Pia found a fern with one curly leaf. It tickled her nose. “Hee-hee!” POP! A second leaf sprang up. Pia blinked. Then she giggled again. POP! POP! Nearby, Bram was counting pebbles outside his little stump house. “Seven, eight… was that a pop?”

“Watch!” said Pia. She wiggled her whiskers and snorted a laugh. Leaves bounced up like green umbrellas. One wore a fallen acorn cap. That made Pia laugh harder. Soon the fern filled the clearing. Bram stood very still. “Pia? Where is my front door?”

Pia stopped giggling. “Sorry, Bram. I’ll help.” She lifted a leaf. Underneath was another leaf. Under that was Bram’s doormat: WELCOME, WIPE PAWS. Bram sighed a long, tired sigh. Whoosh. A leaf curled smaller. Pia’s ears perked up. “Do that again!”

They sighed together. Whoosh, whoosh. There was the door! Bram looked at the arching leaves. “Could we keep some?” “A tunnel!” whispered Pia. She gave one little giggle. Bram gave one gentle sigh. They took turns, growing the roof and shrinking the doorway.

By teatime, the forest’s first green tunnel curved right to Bram’s door. Inside, Pia served acorn cups of berry tea. Bram counted his pebbles. “Nine. Ten. Lovely.” A fern tip tickled his nose. “Hee-hee!” laughed Bram. Pia smiled and sighed. Just enough room for two.
