The whole story

Plip! A raindrop landed on Pim’s nose. Under a fern lay a wonderful leaf: wide, green, and shaped like a little roof. “Just my size!” said Pim. He lifted it carefully. His spikes had popped a mushroom cap yesterday. Poking holes was much easier than not poking holes.

Aiko slid closer. Behind the snail stood a shivering family of beetles. “Room for a few?” Aiko asked. Pim tucked the leaf closer. It was so lovely being dry. All by himself. “Perhaps under the edge,” he said, moving over one very small step.

Pip! One spike slipped through the leaf. Drip, drip, splosh! “Oh, prickles,” whispered Pim. “I’ve spoiled it.” He tried covering the hole with his paw. The rain ran down his elbow instead. Aiko peered up. “Wait. Somebody likes it.”

The smallest beetle caught a drop in an acorn cup. “A waterfall! Who’s thirsty?” The beetles sipped, passing the cup around. Pim blinked. Then he lifted the leaf higher. “Come right in. Mind my prickles.” Aiko slid beside him. Four beetles shuffled underneath.

There was room for every shell, every foot, and nearly every prickle. A beetle’s whisker tickled Pim’s tummy. He giggled. The beetles giggled. Even Aiko gave a slow little chuckle. Outside: patter-patter. Inside: warm shoulders. “Another cup?” asked Pim. Their tiny waterfall said, “Drip!”
