Old Vell sneezed, and every fallen leaf jumped. “Sorry,” he whispered. The huge dragon curled up in the forest clearing. His blanket covered his nose—or his knees—but never both. “I wish,” he murmured, shivering, “someone made blankets in dragon size.”

The whole story

Old Vell sneezed, and every fallen leaf jumped. “Sorry,” he whispered. The huge dragon curled up in the forest clearing. His blanket covered his nose—or his knees—but never both. “I wish,” he murmured, shivering, “someone made blankets in dragon size.”

A mouse stepped forward, carrying a thimble of moss. “For you.” She spread it carefully over one claw. Old Vell held very still. “Ah,” he said. “That bit of me is perfectly comfortable.” The mouse looked at the rest of him. “Oh.”

Soon, a small parade rustled into the clearing. Rabbit brought a square of wool. Squirrel brought a cushion of thistledown. From every forest doorway came someone carrying one soft thing. “Will little pieces do?” asked Rabbit. “Little is what we have,” said Mouse.

Under the moon, the animals stitched their treasures together. The blanket grew past a fern, past a stump, past Mouse’s wildest guess. They tucked in Old Vell’s knees. His nose. His long, lumpy tail. “One claw left!” squeaked Mouse. But that claw was already covered.

Old Vell sighed. Then came a snore like a kettle humming. Warm air ruffled Mouse’s whiskers. Outside the clearing, winter sprinkled snow. Inside, the moss stayed green all winter long. The animals nestled beside their enormous friend. “Dragon size,” Mouse whispered, “has room for everyone.”
