The whole story
Biscuit had soft ears, muddy paws, and a very big plan. He padded along Daisy Street, borrowing one shoe from every doorstep. A slipper. A sandal. A boot with a squeak. Then he tucked them all under Hugo’s porch. Squeak!
By breakfast, Daisy Street was hopping. “Where’s my other shoe?” called one neighbour. “Mine had a squeak!” called another. Everybody searched behind flowerpots and beneath benches. Hugo peered outside. Biscuit’s tail poked from under the porch, wagged once, and disappeared.
“What are you doing, Biscuit?” Hugo followed the muddy paw prints. The neighbours followed Hugo. At the porch, he knelt and peeked. Two bright eyes blinked back. Then two more. And more! “Please come quietly,” Hugo whispered. “There are babies.”
Four cold kittens huddled in the shoes. The smallest wore a slipper like a sleeping bag. “Oh, Biscuit,” said Hugo. “You wanted them cosy.” Biscuit licked one tiny head. “I have something softer,” said a neighbour. “Me too!” Off everyone went.
Back came every neighbour, carrying a blanket. Hugo made a soft nest, and four kittens snuggled in. Everyone collected their shoes. Biscuit checked the blankets with his nose, then curled around the kittens. “Shoe shop closed,” whispered Hugo. The boot squeaked goodbye.
