The whole story

Squeak. Squeak. Bonk! Beri’s wheels bumped a little box in the dark space station. Inside lay one battery, round and yellow as a tiny moon. “Ona! The last one!” Ona bent her tall torch head. Beyond the window, stars glittered. Both robots’ lights were growing sleepy.

“I should have it,” said Ona. “My beam reaches farther.” “My lamp makes a lovely circle,” said Beri. “And I found it.” “Farther!” “Lovelier!” Their lights blinked once. Twice. Pip. Out. “Oh,” whispered Ona. In the darkness, Beri’s wheels gave one very small squeak.

Ona felt for Beri’s hand. “Still here?” “Still squeaky.” Beri nudged the battery toward her. “You shine first. Let’s walk to the window.” “Halfway,” said Ona. “Then your turn.” She tucked the battery into her belly drawer. A golden path stretched across the floor.

They went slowly: step, squeak, step, squeak. Ona’s beam found a moon painted high on the wall. At the halfway bench, she passed Beri the battery. His lamp glowed low. “Look!” Below the moon were tiny painted slippers. “The moon has feet!” Both robots giggled.

Beri lit the rest of their walk. At the window, they leaned together, watching stars tumble past. “I would have missed the slippers,” said Ona. “I would have missed the moon,” said Beri. “One more walk?” “Yes. You first.” Step, squeak. Step, squeak. Neither hurried.
